Do Not Lose Heart

About twenty years ago, I was playing a computer game with my kids. I noticed my son Joshua, who was ten years old at the time, had become very quiet. When I looked at his screen, I noticed the enemy was annihilating him. My daughter Hannah noticed and cried out, “Josh, do you want us to come help?” But Josh replied, “No, it’s over.” He had given up. He had lost heart. That was just a game, but this happens in real life. When we get beat up by circumstances, it seems natural to withdraw for healing or to hide and get away. But second Corinthians four tells us that this thinking is actually backwards. It says, “Since we have this ministry, we do not lose heart.” Our hope has nothing to do with our circumstances or how we feel. Persevere with the Gospel

“When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” Have you ever heard that saying before? When our friends and family reject the Good News of the Gospel, you know it’s easy to get discouraged and to lose heart. But today, I want to encourage you from the book of Galatians, “Let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” This was written by Paul who was beaten, thrown in prison, and persecuted from the ones He shared Jesus with. And even through the struggles, God inspired him to write, “Let us not grow weary.” So even in the times you feel like you have shared Christ’s love many times to no avail, do not give up. Keep praying and sharing! You know, research shows that people need an average seven personal conversations about Jesus before they open their hearts to Christ. How are you at persevering in your Christian walk lately? Merriam-Webster (the dictionary) defines perseverance as the “continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition.” The Apostle Paul spoke a lot about being steadfast in the faith throughout his letters to the early churches. In Philippians three, he wrote, “Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Just like runners who are striving to win a race, we need to focus on the goal line and use our training to help us run well. We must make growth in our spiritual lives a priority. We need to pray to God and read His Word, worship in our community of believers and spend time in true fellowship with them, and we need to tell others about Jesus. Light of the World

The crowd had gathered from what seemed like everywhere. The city was straining under the weight of all of their needs. This particular night, the crowds were packed inside, outside, and everywhere near the temple. They had come to celebrate the Feast of Tabernacles. So here they were, gathered to remember when God faithfully led them as a pillar of fire and protected them. And as they lit the great candelabra, the light streamed throughout the temple. You could hear the voice of Jesus over the incredible hush saying, “I am the light of the world. If you follow Me, you will not be stumbling through the darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” What a statement! He was telling them that He was the One who kept them safe in the wilderness. And the same powerful God has offered us rescue from our sins and eternal death. Means of Growth: Witness

There are five primary means of growth to help your spiritual walk. Bible. Prayer. Worship. Fellowship; and finally, witness. I was recently in the same room with a brand-new grandmother. You’ll never guess what she wanted to talk about…along, of course, with copious pictures. I was recently in the same room with a sports fan and you’ll never guess what he wanted to talk about! My point is that we talk about the things which are important to us. So, you could conclude that some Christians don’t talk about Jesus because He’s not very important to them. As you become more and more involved in the first four means of growth – Bible, Prayer, Worship and Fellowship – Jesus Christ will become more and more important in your life. You’ll naturally want to talk about Him. Witnessing is simply telling others about Jesus and why the Bible says Jesus needs to be important to them.
